Iran has finally begun to open its international airspace after a long period of military tension. The country's civil aviation department announced that international passenger flights will resume in Iran for the first time on Monday, April 20.

All Iranian airports have been closed for security reasons since the start of the war with Israel and the United States on February 28.

The historic decision was confirmed in a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, the French news agency AFP reported. The statement said that international passenger flights will be allowed to take off and land at Mashhad Airport in northeastern Iran starting tomorrow. The move is seen as an early but important signal of normalcy returning to the war-torn region.

Iran's airspace has been completely cut off due to the conflict that lasted for almost two months, causing extreme hardship for ordinary passengers and expatriates.

The launch of the operation at Mashhad Airport is being considered as a pilot phase, which if successful could lead to the gradual reopening of international flights at other major airports, including the capital Tehran. Authorities said the decision was taken after monitoring overall security measures.
